Left At Yale are less pop punk than their label mates Derail. I would describe their music as an interesting combination of midwest emo, emo pop, and indie rock. I think I'd probably call it midwest emo pop, if I had to give a single name. I like their sound a lot; it fits into that vague, post-second wave movement in midwest emo, distinct from the third wave, when latecomers to the sound were evolving its indie rock influences (see Apple of Discord, Fly, Mordecai, and Angels in the Architecture, among others) and I wish they had kept evolving it and given us a full-length.
Updated 9/14/2026: Turns out they did have at least one more release! It's a two song single called the left at yale 5 inch, recorded in 2000. It appears to be handmade, though it was still released through Transit Music. The tracks on it see the band amping up the aggression slightly, and it's great. Holiday is probably their finest track, and certainly my personal favorite. Big thanks to JK for sending it over.

Did you ever hear their other songs "Jason" and "Holiday"?
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't. I found the 'Jason' demo on Youtube but that's it, I don't have the files for either. If you do, I'd love to add them to the post
DeleteI’m looking at an original copy of the left at Yale 5 inch right now. I had reached out to them in the late 90s and they sent it to me for free. If somebody wants it, get me an address somehow. You can have my copy of their self title album as well.
ReplyDeleteNice find!!
