Woke Up Falling

I first encountered Woke Up Falling on Epitonic, that grand old repository. For a kid from the suburbs who didn't know anyone in any scene, never mind the emo scene, Epitonic was a window into a side of music that never made it to the radio. Of course, that window was extremely narrow—Epitonic only offered a couple songs from an artist. I held on to the track "Let Your Halo" for well over a decade before I found the rest of their music on Bandcamp.

Woke Up Falling were from Portland. They played a really fantastic combination of midwest emo, emo pop, and indie rock. They are extremely melodic, but that doesn't mean they don't hit it hard too. I've always loved the vocal work as well, so raw and emotional. They released two full length albums, one in 2001 and the second in 2004, and an EP in 2003, and there are a couple more songs on a lathe 7" that unfortunately aren't available anywhere. The band was working on a second EP when they called it quits; the songs are a natural continuation of the second album and really make me wish the EP had seen a proper release. Additionally, one of the bandmembers posted a pre-first album demo and some other rarities on Soundcloud.

Dividing Blue from Blue, It's Only Your Ghost EP, and Self-Titled LP are available on Bandcamp in digital and physical formats.

  1. Dude this blog is just too much! And I mean that in the best way possible. You're bringing some very good bands to light and I wish more people would visit your blog and discover stuff that they've been missing out on. And this band Woke Up Falling is one that shouldn't go unheard! I downloaded the Dividing Blue From Blue album, and it's exactly what I've been longing to listen to for quite some time now. It is very heavily leaning towards indie rock, but the emo influences are very undeniable. And, (musically, at least) they remind me of and always make me wabt to listen to Old Victrola. The opening guitar on "October" always gets "Road Map" playing in my head! As different as those 2 songs are, they jarringly carry the same feel. And I know you are aware of Old Victrola sir, as I've seen your little comment on their bandcamp page! :) Bottom line, I love your blog. Your taste in emo is very much like mine, and if you ever need some new bands for the blog that you may have not heard, I'm always open to recommending. One band I think you'd really dig, whether you post them here or not is Ancient Of Days. Not sure if you're familiar with them. But you ahould check 'em out. A very faith based Mineral and Pictures Can Tell sort of sound. Anywho, sorry for the long comment man lol. Thanks for this blog and taking the tine to work on it!

    1. Yeah, Woke Up Falling are really great, I'm lucky that ex-members gave me so much material to work with. Thanks for the rec, I'm in the process of checking out Ancient of Days. Do you have their first album from 1999? I haven't been able to find that one yet

  2. I do have that first album, yes! I bought it on cd from discogs when I first heard them. Luckily at the time, there were like 3 sellers looking to get rid of it. I'm just currently without an actual PC to rip it on right now. My computer took a crap on me last year and I've been downloading stuff to my phone ever since. I can try and get to someone's place who has one though, because the ripped file I did have on my phone accidentally got deleted. But yeah, I'd definitely love to at least rip it for you as soon as I can. It's almost the same album, with 5 tracks being the same on both albums, and the same track numbers as well. I'll definitely let you know when I'm able to get it ripped again. Hopefully in the next couple days.
